Photos / Fotos - Benasque

The Gran Hotel de Benasque is out of the frame in the second image, but it is approximately to the immediate left center of the second photo.

About 20 miles to the right is the border of France at the crest of the Pyrenees.

Travel Time / Duración del viaje

The travel time from Barcelona to the mountain valley of Benasque is about 4 hours, more if you make stops while driving or if you take the bus.

Benaque and Eresué are in the mountains with an elevation of about 1300 meters or about 1 mile. During the last hour of travel, the route passes through a long winding gorge with a beautiful river in the adjacent canyon. If you have a choice, sit on the left side of your vehicle going up or on the right coming back to get views down into the river.

If you would like to rent a car, see Avis or Hertz.

Wildlife / Fauna

The most characteristic and emblematic animal of the valley is the "sarrio", known in english as the Pyrenean chamois. It is a beautiful animal that lives high in the mountains but if you get up early in the morning and walk up the road from Benasque you will be able to see them, since they come down to the river.

There are also plenty of marmots, boars, roe deer and bobcats.

Benasque

Benasque is part of the Natural Park Posets-Maladeta. It is a protected area that contains more than 82000 acres, with an impressive group of 13 glaciers, 95 lakes of glacier origin and beautiful waterfalls. In this area we also find the highest mountain in the iberian peninsula, the Aneto peak with an astounding 11,165 ft. I have to say, having hiked it twice (or was it three times?, i'll have to look back at my photo albums), it is one of the most beautiful hikes I have ever done. But I digress. There is plenty of interesting wildlife in this park. More on that to follow...

Sketch of the Church / Un Dibujo de la Iglesia

May 16, 2005
Church of Eresué / Iglesia de Eresué

Church of Saint John the Baptist / La Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

Eresué

Eresué

View Original Article about Eresué [PDF]

In this route through El Solano, the traveller has a first obligatory stop in Eresué. The Romanic church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, "Negüé House", "Arnaldet House", the wash basin and a stroll by the track of "el Mon", make it worth it. Besides, the village enjoys a privileged location. Safe from annoying winds, its southern facing direction allows it to enjoy one more hour of sun, warmer days and fresher nights in the summer and temperatures a couple of degrees higher in the winter (compared to other locations in the Valley of Benasque). For those who knew this village in the past, surely that have not forgotten that narrow highway of continuous and inclined zigzags. Today, of course, its access is very different, with a smooth layout, beautiful panoramic views on the mountain range of Chía and the distant but towering mountain named Turbón.

The church of Saint John the Baptist conserves great part of its original Romanesque-Lombard construction of the XII century. As it is common to the small Romanic churches of the area, the church occupies a gorgeous location and has a small rectangular plant with a semicircular apse. This one offers decorative elements very characteristic of the lombard tradition: blind arches and the pillars known as "leseras", small pillars that leaned on the outside wall. In addition, as you can see in the picture, the church underwent a modification in its height. Originally the ceiling went over the blind arches.

Other distinguishing elements are the enormous baptismal pile (out of proportion compared to the church) and small church cemetery just outside. As it happens with some towns of the french and the catalan side of the Pyrenees (areas of great wealth in Romanesque architecture), to gain access to the interior of the church we must cross the cementery, still in use.

Among the houses we should emphasize, by its situation in the highest part, "Negüé House". Come closer to it and you will see that it has many elements of interest: its great dimensions and noble looks, its old doorway with the traditional arch and Coat of Arms; its door knocker...

In "Arnaldet House", we observe a wooden double entrance door (the great one, for the cavalries, and the small one, for their inhabitants) and a Coat of Arms over the door. The knocker, unfortunately, disappeared years ago.

In other houses we will find elements elaborated in forge (handles and nails in the doors and the balconies) and, even, some fireplaces in the traditional style (the bell of the chimney ocupying all the whole ceiling of the room). The wash basin is in a very cozy and fresh corner next to the brook. It has two areas, one higher than the other and, in his day, it was covered. You can get to it by a short walk from the village in the South direction.

Finally, we can go through the forest track of "el Mon" that takes us from Eresué to the nice town of Cerler. This stroll takes us through the grassy meadows of Eresué, then through a mixed forest of medium mountain (boxwood, birch, ash) and takes us to alpine meadows and, finally, pine. This zone is inhabited by the "urogallo" (a type of grouse). More or less half way there, we can take a detour towards the chapel of Saint Marguerite. With only five inhabited houses and, hence, very few inhabitants, taking a walk under the lukewarm sun (long diurnal companion, that's why this area is called "el Solano") is pleasant and, without a doubt, relaxing, specially for those visitors who come from great large cities.

Let's Go! Barcelona City Guide

[Travel Website] [View on Amazon.com]
Barcelona loves to indulge in the fantastic. From the urban carnival that is Las Ramblas to buildings with no straight lines; from wild festivals to even wilder nightlife; from bronzed nude beaches to a beloved white gorilla named Floquet, the city pushes the limits of style and good taste in everything it does, with amazing results. As the center of the whimsical and daring Modernisme architectural movement, Barcelona holds fairy-tale creations that are like no other buildings in the world; as home to three of the most well-known Surrealist painters, Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, and the lovable Joan Miró, even Barcelona's most famous art is grounded in a reality alternative to the one that the rest of us know.

The time is now for Barcelona. In the quarter-century since Spain has been freed from Franco's oppressive regime, Barcelona has led the autonomous region of Catalunya in a resurgence of a culture so esoteric and unique it is puzzling even to the rest of Spain. The city has prospered and given itself a major makeover that began as preparation for the Olympics in the early 1990s, but was so successful that the image-obsessed Barceloneses have kept it going. The result is a vanguard city squeezed between the mesmerizing blue waters of the Mediterranean and the green Tibidabo hills, flashing with such vibrant colors and intense energy, you will see Barcelona long after you have closed your eyes.

Barcelona is a gateway: the gateway to Catalunya, to Spain, to the Mediterranean, and to the Pyrenees. Pack your swimsuit and your skis, your art history book and your clubbing shoes, and don't worry about the fact that you don't speak Spanish: neither does Barcelona.

Plane Tickets / Billetes de Avión
After living in this country for 7 years, I have tried every way to purchase airplane tickets :)

I have tried travel agents as well as buying them online. Personally I find that you can get better deals if you purchase your tickets online. There are a bunch of travel sites that you can use. I have personally used Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz and Cheaptickets (you can find the links on the column to the right).

There is a site called booking buddy that allows you to search many different sites without having to reenter your travel dates every time.

Most sites will now give you e-tickets instead of paper tickets (which means there are no tickets to lose or forget at home the day of your trip :) Basically you just (print your receipt for proof, just in case) show up with your passport.

Personalmente, yo he encontrado mejores gangas comprandolos en internet.

The Valle de Benasque is a valley high in the Pyrennees with snowcapped peaks. The principal town in the valley is Benasque, and it has many hotels, restaurants, and supply stores. Its very popular with tourists, skiers, and parachuters who jump from the steep mountain tops.

Not far from Benasque is a southern facing mountain that has several villages that enjoy the warm sunshine. Together, these villages are known as El Solano. The closests village in El Solano is called Eresué. Mercedes' father Antonio and his parents were born in El Solano (actually my grandfather happened to be born in Bourdeaux, France, although his parents were from Eresué and he grew up in Eresué) Today, Antonio maintains the old house in Eresué that he grew up in, which is next door to a new house which you can see in the the top image on Mercedes' blog.

Other villages in El Solano include Ramastué, Liri, and Arasan. Nearby villages in the Valle de Benasque include El Run, Chia, Castejon de Sos, Sesué, Villanova, and Eriste.
